Connected and Confident: The Transformative Power of Learning in Community

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

In a world where independence is often celebrated, many of us have leaned on old beliefs that success is a solo sport. While this strategy works for some, what we know from working with hundreds of women in programs, group coaching sessions and workshops is that when women learn in community (from and with others) they go further and faster with far less friction.

The power of community is more than just a feel-good phrase—it’s a proven catalyst for professional growth, resilience, and sustained success. For women navigating their careers, learning and growing in community is a game-changer. This blog explores why learning in community matters, what holds us back, and how both individuals and leaders can leverage this transformative power.

Why Learning in Community Matters

Sustained behaviour change doesn’t just happen by accident. Charles Duhigg, in his book The Power of Habit cites two key factors that drive lasting behaviour change:

  • A Life Crisis – When something big happens that creates an undeniable “why” for change
  • Learning with Others – When you engage with a community, you create ongoing momentum, accountability, and support

Here’s why community matters for personal and professional growth:

  1. It Normalises Our ExperiencesWhen you’re facing challenges, it’s easy to think, ‘It’s just a me thing’ or ‘the problem is me’. But in a supportive community, you quickly realise you’re not alone. The challenges faced are often systemic or universal, not personal flaws; women discover that their struggles are shared and in fact normal – and that realisation is incredibly freeing. We repeatedly observe the transformation that occurs when groups of like-minded women come together in our Women in Leadership programs.
  2. Evidence That Change Is PossibleSeeing others achieve what you aspire to, makes your goals feel more attainable. When we witness the real-life success stories of others in community, it reinforces the belief, ‘If they can do it, I can too’.
  3. Support When It Gets ToughThere will be moments when you want to give up. Having a community means being connected with people who understand your world and have your back. They’ll remind you of your strengths, provide perspective when yours is lost, and help you push through challenges when things get tough.

  1. AccountabilityWe’re often more accountable with our promises to others than we are with those to ourselves. In a community, you’re less likely to let yourself off the hook because others are counting on you to do what you say and cheering you on.

In our Acts of Confidence programs and events, the power of community is palpable; women learn from and with each other, creating deep and powerful bonds that fast-track their success.

What Gets in the Way of Engaging with Community

Despite the benefits, many of us struggle to engage with community. Here are some common barriers – and how to overcome them:

1. Mindset: ‘I Should Be Able to Do It Myself’We’ve been conditioned to value independence, but success doesn’t have to be a solo journey. Asking for support (AOC #4 Ask for help) is not a sign of weakness; it’s a strategic move that successful people have learned to make a regular habit.

2. Fear of Not BelongingThe fear and vulnerability of not fitting in can be paralysing and communities thrive on authenticity. Showing up as your true self is what allows real connections to form. When this happens connection outweighs our fears and creates a sense of belonging; this quote from Brené Brown captures the possibility ‘Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives’.

3. Perception There is Not Enough TimeWe often de-prioritise community because we’re “too busy” getting the work done, however investing in relationships and connection can actually save time in the long term by providing short-cuts, the benefit of experience, insights, and support that accelerates your contribution and growth.

4. Discomfort with NetworkingIn many contexts, networking can feel transactional or contrived instead of what it has the potential to be, which is relationship building. When we approach it with curiosity and a genuine desire to connect, other people sense our intention, and we create the opportunity for authentic connection and the possibility of deep relationships.

How to Leverage the Power of Community – For Individuals

Ready to harness the power of community? Here are practical steps to get you started:

1. Connect Inside and Outside Your OrganisationJoin professional groups, both locally and globally. Look for industry-specific associations, women’s networks, or leadership forums. Find one or two events per month and commit to attending them.

2. Attend Events and Participate FullyGo beyond just showing up. Engage, ask questions, and share your insights. Being visible makes it easier for others to connect with you. Make sure you follow up after events with people you connected with that were interesting and nurture those connections.

3. Experiment TogetherCollaboration builds connection. Try small experiments with your peers, whether it’s proposing an idea or project, convening a lunch and learn session or sharing insights over coffee. Opportunities to spend time together professionally or socially can create the pathway for connection.

4. Identify Your Support TeamMap out your network: Who are your mentors, peers, and connectors? Don’t underestimate the power of ‘weak ties’, those acquaintances who you don’t know so well but can introduce you to new people and opportunities.

5. Give as Much as You ReceiveA thriving community is built on reciprocity. Offer your support, insights, and encouragement to others without expecting anything in return. Generosity strengthens your network and builds trust.

How Leaders Can Support Individuals to Tap Into the Power of Community

Many successful female executive leaders reference the importance of cultivating and maintaining a support network. Having a group of professional colleagues who are navigating similar challenge and can commiserate and laugh with you are vital to well being and sustained success. As leaders, you’ve likely leveraged a trusted inner circle for years; when you share the impact of this and encourage others to create their own network, it is an exponential gift. Here’s some tips for how to help others:

1. Coach Them to See the BenefitsHelp your team members understand how community and a good support network can accelerate their growth and support their career goals.

2. Make IntroductionsFacilitate connections by introducing them to people within and outside the organisation. Invite them to broader organisational meetings and projects to expand their networks.

3. Prioritise Community EngagementExplicitly tell your team that building connections is important. Give them the time and encouragement to participate in professional groups and events. Encourage them to be part of our Core Confidence community.

4. Share Your Own StoryRole model the power of community by sharing how your own network has helped you succeed. Personal stories make the benefits tangible.

Conclusion: No One Thrives Alone

The power of community is transformative. It normalises women’s experiences, provides support and accountability, and accelerates our growth. While fear and relaying on hard work can keep women isolated, when in a female only cohort, they enhance their leadership skills. Our programs are specifically designed to normalise and address the barriers women experience and encourage them to take small action steps to build confidence, resilience and lead with confidence and authenticity.
